A major fish kill has occurred in Cherry Creek in downtown Denver.
Meghan Hughes, spokeswoman for the Denver Environmental Health Department, said the number of fish that have died are "between the upper hundreds to a few thousand."
Hughes said that officials have no idea what led to the die-off.
However, she said speculation is that it may be a change in the weather.
"It was fairly warm for a couple of days" and then it became dramatically colder, which may have reduced the amount of oxygen in the water, causing the fish to die, she said.
The dead fish, identified as shad by the city of Denver, have been spotted from Confluence Park upstream to Speer Boulevard.
