Ice fishing get together
Post By: Covidiencowboy      Posted: 11/4/2009 7:30:56 AM     Points: 959
It seems all the ice fishing get togethers are South of Denver. It would be great to have one up North like last year at Boyd. I'm sure lots of people would show up and their are lots of lakes to choose from in and around Loveland, Fort Collins and so on.

Hey Cowboy,
This has come up before and the only advice I can give would be to set one up!

The one scheduled in December is being put together by BCIII and he lives in the Sprngs I believe and he is also the lake skipper for 11mile.

Now, I am working on putting another one together in January and am considering trying to make it more central like Green Mountain.

But if you really want one closer to Ft Collins or Loveland, go for it!
Reply by: BCIII      Posted: 11/4/2009 8:08:30 AM     Points: 657
I think a get together at Granby would be fun for Lakers. Mark is right.... I usually put together south of Denver because 11mile is the one reservoir that can produce both monster pike and monster trout. Not to many others that are like that. I understand the travel, as I generally have a hard time heading north..... So go on and get something going for up north!!!! I would love to try a new location.
Reply by: Covidiencowboy      Posted: 11/4/2009 8:36:57 AM     Points: 959
Mark, I'm an old man but I'll try to stir up some interest here. I'd be more than happy to help. I was actually thinking more alone the lines of North against South type of thing. You, Jed and the other guys against us Northern Light weights.
Reply by: Smoke Shack      Posted: 11/4/2009 8:58:45 AM     Points: 34
Light weights?
I think Granby in January is a fine idea and being a caterer will do what I can to help organize.
Reply by: Covidiencowboy      Posted: 11/4/2009 9:01:50 AM     Points: 959
Smoke Shack, I was just joking with Mark. I'm very sure we could hold our own. I think all they have is the LEGEND! Ha! Ha!
Reply by: Smoke Shack      Posted: 11/4/2009 9:12:41 AM     Points: 34
Legend,,, Thats a fishing rod right? Anyone can buy those. ha,ha

I'll check back later to see the progress of this great idea.

Sounds like a great idea to me, I'll be up there anyways in January. Smoke Shack and I are usually up there together, so yea lets set something up for sure. Just has to be on my week off!! I'm sure Top Shelf will join in on this too, I'll talk to him and see what he thinks.

Northern vs southern... Man almost sounds like a gang fight or something LOL..... I am down to do a get together anywhere. The last one we did at Boyd worked out great. Bass Commando(who lives down this way) put that one together. I challenge any of you that live up that way to set one up. Pick a date and lets do it!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I am not available to go, I would still lend my cooking hut for the occasion, as well as get some cool prizes donated....

JED, just trying to get something going up here. I missed the last one at Boyd because I was in Cali. If nothing else, maybe you, Deadhead, Fishseal, and a few others can get together. Last year we got Matt to ice fish for the first time and if nothing else we can all meet at St Vrain's and have a multi species type fish contest. The good thing about St Vrain's is all the kids are almost guaranteed to catch fish.

Why did I have to mention anything about the "gangs", now they are going to kick me off for promoting riots LOL..
We will have the get together at the mile on 12/26. From the talks of it everyone is ready to start planning the next one.... Any lake skippers up there that wants to throw out a date and time?? I will committ to coming and helping...

Reply by: brookieflyfisher      Posted: 11/4/2009 6:57:46 PM     Points: 1832
Red Feathers, Douglass, Boyd, or Grandby would be my choices.

Out of those, I would pick DOUGLAS for warmwater (I like my obscure lakes) and GRANDBY for Lakers. Or both. That sounds like a good idea.

As I have said before, I want to see an ice laker tourney.

I'd be willing to help with any kind of planning or anything else. I've only ever made it to one get-together, and I want to get to some more.

I will vote for Douglas, I have not been there in years either! This is assuming that it land on a day I can make it that is! How about a Wednesday? JK, I need to meet James so make it a Sunday! Someone pick a date soon please, so I can get it on my busy 'unemployed' calendar!!! LOL!

Would Broomfield be north or south? Maybe I'm neutral. I will join in if I don't have to work on that day. I don't care if it's warm water or cold. I enjoy either.Maybe we should do a poll of those that would play on whether it should be warm or cold water.

And I double my vote for Douglas. Could go for a "most species" prize, an "overall weight" prize, and a "wiper prize" for whoever can find one of those things under the ice. In fact, now that I think about it, I'm going to be icing that place anyways. Sun or Sat. January or late December will probably have the best ice and best fishing.

South side rules!

BTW, I’ve seen how guys from the south fish:

I hate to say it but the "NORTHERNERS" style of jigging for fish is heading to the Larimer country fairgrounds and throwing ping pong balls in the goldfish bowls in order to catch a prize fish. HAHAHAHAHAH

Come on with it Team North........ Come on with it.

I am just curious...... Down south we ice fish for prize trout and Pike.... What do you ice fish for at Boyd..... Crappie and bluegill?
Reply by: FishermanFrank      Posted: 11/5/2009 8:40:55 AM     Points: 135
I'd be interested in a North outing. I'd like to find some more ice fishing buddies on this end of the state.
I moved up to Denver from the Springs, and my old fishing partners have a tough time making it up to this end very often.
I haven't tried the ice on Boyd or some of the other lower lakes yet. Sounds like perch might be fun to go after?
Reply by: HeavyC      Posted: 11/5/2009 9:00:10 AM     Points: 1211
Nope, Boyd = Perch & Slimer trout! LOL!

Boyd might be a good choice too for lots of species... They have Whites, eyes, trout, cats, perch, crappie, gills, etc...

The biggest obsticle I can see with Boyd or any low elevation lake, is the unpredictable ice. But we'll see if one of the northerners is willing to host such an event and get it planned!

I am sure we would be there, depending on ice conditions.
Reply by: JED      Posted: 11/5/2009 9:50:21 AM     Points: 3510
Boyd has been one of my favorite lakes this year. The trout bite seems to be doing well now, as well as white bass when one can find them. I agree with Mark as far as the unpredictable ice, but we should be okay if we did a get together early on......
Reply by: Covidiencowboy      Posted: 11/5/2009 9:56:10 AM     Points: 959
No offense BCIII, but I'd rather eat Bluegills and Crappies over slimer stocked trout and Pike.

Mark, that is a good point, but Boyd did work out last year. We do have Matt and Chad up here and listening to The Fan with Terry and Chad 104.3 Sat. Morning, those guys are in touch with all the conditions all over the Front Range. This is early in the discussion and when The ice starts setting in, we'll have a lot better idea.

Bite me...... They may taste better, but if I had sit in a hut all day and all I pulled out was a couple crappie.... just wouldnt seem worth it. What is the watter clarity at Boyd.... I used to live in Loveland about 8 years ago and from what I could remember it was always really murky. Perhaps it was becuase the level of water was so low. Is it still that way?

Jim, I do agree that we need a lake that has some big fish and not just panfish. I'm just making suggestions right now more for the ease of travel for all of you coming up I-25. I doubt very many people want to drive 3 or more hours one way during the Winter. I am very sure that someone will come up with the perfect lake and with it the ease of travel for everyone.

There are plenty of big fish in all those lakes up there. Walleye, Wiper, White bass, catfish, and big trout all come under the ice.

Boyd's perch pop. is rebuilding from the slaughter two years ago. Panfish populations go in cycles. That's why I vote douglass.

However, a white bass hunt at Boyd would be a riot. Find a school, and you'll have about 15 minutes of ridiculous fishing, then you have to follow the school. Lots of guessing, lots of luck, but also lots of fish. Boyd's ice is usually really good, it is one of the first to freeze and one of the thickest ice lakes. Last year was a warm winter, it isn't looking that way this year.

I still like douglass because it is obscure. Everyone always does boyd. I like the opportunity of trying a new spot and leveling the playing field.

If I may suggest, it may be advisable to contact the park regarding the use of the park for this contest, as small or large it may be.
The reason for this is cost, the parks interest, and possible regulations or rules regarding "parties." I know it may seem lame, but I was not aware until doing a bit of research that even if I was to take a party of 8 or more fishing at a natural area, I would need to submit an event form to the Natural Areas of Fort Collins.
Just something we may want to consider.

Fish Seal, Is this just in Fort Collins? Or in general? We have had a number of these get togethers and never had a problem. When I spoke to someone with the state parks, they said as long as it does not involve money being exchanged, or promoted via flyers and such as a "tournament", it would be okay? I for sure dont want to promote something that may be considered illegal, or could look bad for our awesome site...

P.S I called and left a message with the state folks, will let you know

We have had several this year and it was checked into before. I don't know if it being on the ice makes a difference. I don't think we would have anyone bringing eight people in one vehicle. I would think if we arrived in several different vehicles that they would make out fine on the monitary side. I know we can't do money prizes or charge money but we were told a friendly lure tourney was okay. I think this one is more of just a get together than a party.

I didn't know. That's why I was just asking. If it's been investigated before, then I guess it should be good. I didn't follow the other "get togethers" because I wasn't able to attend.
I'm glad that you guys cover all your bases. I sometimes leave something out of the loop, only have to back track to fix it.
I'm hoping to attend, but no promises.

Danny....... Thats a great point now that I think about it..... I guess its mostly about convienence. I have fished several of those northern lakes, and have done well, not that its really hard to catch a perch/blue gill/crappie. They just dont impress me that much. Not to say they are great producing lakes..... Just not my style, but I will make a point to show up for this shin dig. The south with rise above the rest.

BCIII, like Pike and trout are really hard to catch. Maybe we ought to have a Musky, Tiger Musky contest. That would seperate the men from the boys. We all know they are hard to catch. I've only seen one real Musky caught thru the ice, a 48" out of Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. It wasn't me tho. My biggest was 46" in open water. Walleye or Sauger would also be a good contest.

Heavy C, it's a little early to set a date yet, but seeing what a great response we got, i'll try to work something out with Jed. We absolutely want him to be here. I'll start to find out when Boyd starts iceing up and so on. I've never fish there so I don't know much about it.
I guess now we all need to decide whether we want a lure contest, what kind of fish and so on. I"m open to suggestion, prizes and so on.

According to last years reports there was 4-6" of clear ice in late December. . . Is that enough for something like this? I don't plan to fish but I will be there for the get together.

4-6 of clear is enough for a get together, though it is a tad thin for some. This year there should be more. I saw skim ice on some ponds in Denver during the blizzard.

I want to get in on as many trips as possible. Sounds like a 12/26 at elenen mile, something up north sometime, I am pretty central so anywhere is pretty easy. Unfortunately, I don't get on the site as often as I would like so if a trip is planned by anyone, please e-mail so I can see about attending.

This applies to summer trips (boat, shore, river) and ice.

Thanks

I think it should be in the mid part of January. Two just a week apart could be to much for some.

Also remember the colorado classic at eleven mile is in january. Third weekend I believe. Lots of people go to that so we might want to catch the dates for that tourney. Just some food for thought.

One thing to consider also, is Boyd fishes way better during early ice then it does later.
