Some help with lineLine selection
Post By: J Rod Posted: 11/2/2009 10:11:31 PM Points: 35
I'm doing a little shopping for some new line and I am interested in giving Fireline a try. The Cabela's website has two colors, Smoke and Flame Green. Which would be better suited it CO? My guess would be green is easier to see by the fisherman, but also easier for the fish to see, so Smoke would be a better choice. I usually use Vanish, but came across Seguar Florocarbon. Is this stuff worth the price? Thanks! J

He had the smoke color so im not sure if it was just the line or the color affecting his fishing but as soon as he changed back to regular trilene monofilament he started catching more fish so i dont think fireline is very good. Vanish is just as good as Seguar. If you decided to go with fireline, buy the smaller #test than your regular's. I heard good things about seaguar, although I personally use P-Line 100% fluoro and P-line floroclear. Oh yeah, I used flame green fireline. Reply by: brookieflyfisher Posted: 11/2/2009 11:23:35 PM Points: 1832 Flame green is made for crappie fishermen and other fishermen who watch their line for strikes rather than rely on feel. Smoke is the color you want for 99% of all applications, and it is less visible to the fish anyway. CL Reply by: JIGORNAUT Posted: 11/3/2009 10:12:15 AM Points: 33 I use 6# smoke fireline, with a 5' vanish leader and catch plenty of fish, I also use crystal fireline icefishing with vanish leader, same deal. Reply by: fishinggem Posted: 11/3/2009 10:30:06 AM Points: 54 When you guys tie on the florocarbon leader, do you use the same pound post test (or less) or test line with the same diameter? Reply by: heed Posted: 11/3/2009 10:39:37 AM Points: 21 I use 8# Power Pro with 4-5' 6# floro leader. Works great in most applications. Reply by: J Rod Posted: 11/3/2009 10:54:26 AM Points: 35 Thanks for the advice everyone! It looks like I'll give the Smoke colored Fireline a try with a floro leader. Thanks again! J Reply by: littlemac Posted: 11/3/2009 3:34:00 PM Points: 378 if you havent bought yet ,try power pro line with pline florocarbon leader! Reply by: Walleyeone Posted: 11/3/2009 5:39:41 PM Points: 396 They also make a crystal fireline which is tranlucent but I still use a floro leader. JD Reply by: brookieflyfisher Posted: 11/3/2009 5:54:19 PM Points: 1832 Don't buy the crystal crap. Not only is it hardly invisible, it turns white upon UV exoposure, essentially making it glow all the way to the bait. Go with smoke or camo green. Reply by: bobco Posted: 11/3/2009 8:32:49 PM Points: 84 I tryed the crystal stuff, felt like a steel cable going throught the guides, been using power pro with pline leader for a couple of seasons now, real happy with it. Made in Grand Junction Colorado , was bought by shimmano but still has 130 people employed in GJ, besides it is good stuff.....can buy it at wally world. Reply by: fish fetish Posted: 11/3/2009 11:10:31 PM Points: 5 I don't use braid so no help there, but as far as fluorocarbon goes, p-line is every bit as good as as seaguar. Vanish in my honest opinion, sucks. Have never had any problems w/P-line fluoroclear or 100% fluoro for a leader. I do use Trilene XL or Suffix elite for main-line though- have heard very good things about p-line CXX(extra strong) as well. Hope this helps, good luck! Reply by: Fishful Thinker Posted: 11/4/2009 8:46:44 AM Points: 1768 Trilene 100% Flourocarbon is great stuff for the leader! Size the leader to your fishing condition - in other words my leader might vary from 6 to 20 pound test with the same main superline depending on what I'm casting. CL Reply by: J Rod Posted: 11/4/2009 9:25:17 AM Points: 35 So, with all of this floro leader talk, what knot is best for tying floro leader to braided/super main line? Or should I use other means? J Reply by: FishForAll Posted: 11/4/2009 10:33:23 AM Points: 1823 LINKDouble Uni knot - See link Hope this helps Jeff Reply by: J Rod Posted: 11/4/2009 12:22:10 PM Points: 35 Great site! This is just what I have been looking for. Thanks FFA! J Reply by: hogdog Posted: 11/4/2009 9:19:25 PM Points: 7 I gave P-line floroclear a try and it has horrible memory. Is that to be expected with all Co-polymers or 100% floro? Reply by: gatorjoe Posted: 11/4/2009 10:43:31 PM Points: 447 Not sure on other peoples opinions on this, but if you choose to tie leader directly to fireline I would recommend taking a lighter to the end for a second. I usually leave about a 1/2 inch tag and then burn it so it balls up to prevent slipping. But I really prefer to tie palomar knots onto a swivel with both lines. Just tie the leader in a palomar knot onto the swivel and then tie the fireline in a palomar know to the swivel and just pull the leader through. Seems a lot stronger to me personally. Reply by: fish fetish Posted: 11/4/2009 11:24:54 PM Points: 5 I did get a spool of 8 lb. p-line fluoroclear that I spooled up as main-line that had horrible memory- but have had no problem using 4 or 6 lb. for leader. Have landed carp to 15 lbs. & steelhead to 11 lbs. or so using 6 lb. fluoroclear for leader. The CX 100% fluorocarbon rocks too. Back to top...
