I was on the north end in my 2up polaris indy on Tuesday. Ice was about 8 to 9 inches. Had just rained the night before and was very slushy. I was getting stuck when stopping as I only had .75 track. We were the only crazy ones fishing Tuesday and iced about 15 lakers from 16 to 21 inches. I only rode the north end were the boat launch was and got thru the locked fence by going thru the right side of it in between a boulder. Slush was about 3 to 5 inches with an inch of soft snow on top. I also got stuck a few times leaving as the road had 5 to 6 inches of snow on the hill out to the road. Had to remove my snowmobile off trailer, lower psi in tires and drive out of parking lot then load up snowmobile on the road.
Took me about an hour and a half to deal with my 4runner getting stuck then waiting for I25 to open from Silverthorne to denver due to avalanche clearing and did not get home until 7 when normally leaving greenmountain at 1I would get home at 3. First snowmobiling and lakers of the season well worth it.
Just my type of an adventure! I remember going to this lake that was not worth it hiking for a quarter mile to only fall to my knees each step I took to only come to a bunch of wet slush and not catch a fish or attempt to fish more than 20 minutes.
Hey Burny..so is it" the main parking area" on north end??the little road that actually leads down to ice and has the outhouse?? Is this the road you are referring to that is fenced off?? if yes, where are other parking areas?? Thank you
Yes that is the one but the fence is locked off after the 2nd parking lot. The little road leading down to the boat ramp has a little parking area then the bigger one and has the fence. You can park there where it is fenced off as that's where I usual park and unload the snowmobile. That parking lot is pretty big and before I had the snowmobile I would hop the hill and go down the mountain right onto the lake from the parking area but now with my snowmobile I just ride it out to the boat ramp onto the lake. I am pretty extreme and will fish in any weather as it was windy and the drift was pretty bad that day. With more snow and avalanche possibilities on I25 it may be a while before I get up there again. I usual fish this lake about twice a month. I fished greenmountain until May this past year the ice was that great. There is no fence on the entry to the outhouse just to the boat ramp. Be careful as I barely made it out of that parking lot with the snow and slush. I almost slid off the right side down the cliff.

I e-mailed Melody Lodge for info on the gate and received word that the forest service had attempted to open it on Monday (1/9) but had trouble with the lock. They went back and opened it yesterday (1/11).

I also have nearly been stuck in the lot by the outhouse but there is a pull off if you continue toward the dam another 1/4 mile past the parking entrance. It is level with the road and not as risky when the snow is deep.
