Celebrating a legend by: Tim Emery   6/7/2010
Years ago, I had the honor of meeting a Colorado legend.  I met him for the first time at an ISE show.  I was about 10 years old, at the show with my dad, who didn’t really fish, but took me anyway.  We ran in to Charlie Meyers.  Every Sunday when I opened the sports section I would turn to the outdoor section. And every Sunday my dad would tell me he knew Charlie.  I didn’t believe him until that ISE show.  Years later, I met Charlie at a Trout Unlimited banquet.  He remembered my dad and me.

Charlie wrote semi-weekly columns for The Denver Post for over 40 years.  He did it for the love of the outdoors.  You may think he had the best job in the world. After all, he fished and hunted all the time.  But, he also had to write two columns every week.  Sit down and try that sometime.  Charlie took us to places that we still dream about, and he fought for things that he was passionate about.  He wanted to preserve Colorado, keep people fishing and hunting and passing those traditions to the next generation.

Saturday, June 12, is a day to celebrate Charlie’s life and legacy.  South Park, Colorado will host the day’s events.

Starting at 10:30 am, The Colorado Division of Wildlife will dedicate The Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area.  This will happen at the Dream Stream.

Following that dedication, head to the town of Fairplay for the Hooked on Fairplay Fishing Festival.  Fish the Fairplay beach where the biggest fish will land you $500.

That evening, stay in Fairplay and join Colorado Trout Unlimited and Fish Explorer.com at the American Safari Ranch as they host “Fish On”, an evening of storytelling and music.  Storytellers include Kirk Deeter, Kerry Caragher, Tyler Baskfield, Woody Paige, Sharon Lance and Don Watts.  Chad LaChance will emcee the event. Some tickets are still available.

In closing, Colorado lost one of its true sportsmen. Charlie wouldn’t like the fanfare, but he would have loved the party.  Come out and remember this great man.

A great tribute for one who gave so much to Colorado's outdoorsmen.

It is the biggest honor of my career to honor Charlie. If it wasn't for Charlie and Terry Wickstrom, I'd still be fishing weekends and working a real job! Besides helping my career along, Charlie was a huge advocate for CO outdoors and outdoorsmen and a great adventurer himself. This weekend will be a blast and I can't wait! CL
